Google used to have a link to its version of the DMOZ Directory,

http://directory.google.com/

on their home page, along with links to “Images”, “Maps” and such.

Then they moved it to the secondary page so you had to go to

Google Home -> More -> Directory.

Now you have to go to

Google Home -> About Us -> Google A-Z -> Directory

It is still there, but it is getting harder and harder to find. I have it in my bookmarks, but I teach basic Internet skills at the library, and I want to tell the beginners how to find it. The path above is WAY too complicated for beginners.

This brings up a wider question – have directories become obsolete, and is Google abandoning them?
No one seems to be answering the question, do they?
If Google hasn’t given up, why do they hide the link?
If I don’t think they are obsolete, fine, but if Google does, its four gazillion users are going to have a hard time finding the directory, aren’t they?
Search isn’t always better, although most people use it first. Do a search for [Modesto restaurants] and you’ll get 700,000 hits – there are not that many people in Modesto, let alone restaurants. The DMOZ listings for restaurants and bars has just 29, all of the restaurants in Modesto.
I’ll put the Q up for vote. Unless one of you is the CEO of Google, and promised to put the directory back, there isn’t a good answer.
