SEO Strategy Overview
Perhaps the most useful tool for businesses today is the internet. As most executives in large corporations have already developed a powerful online campaign, small businesses and even individuals realize the benefits of SEO strategy. In fact companies of all sizes flock to professional digital advertising firms, or individual contractors. This can have an extremely large return on investment. For many, the most promising results come from great search engine optimization. Search engine optimization, or SEO, involves many elements of a web site’s design, as well as offsite factors, that influence a site’s position in the major search engine results for relevant keywords. Since many consumers put great trust in the top organic results, placement on the first page of Google, Bing, or Yahoo will provide credibility to the site, and direct an incredible amount of relevant traffic to the website. Naturally, this results in an increasing number of conversions, the final goal of any business. Although it may be a sound investment for many companies to outsource this service, owners can learn a lot about SEO strategy on their own. This article will outline a very important aspect of fundamental SEO, keyword research. It attempts to explain the reasoning behind various techniques.
Fundamental keyword research:
Although many amateur SEOs ignore this important step, it should be the starting point of any targeted internet marketing campaign. It involves deciding for which keywords a site should attempt to place in the top results. It would be a terrible mistake to simply choose words that sound relevant or popular. The optimizer must obtain a fair amount of data in order to make an educated decision. Free keyword tools online provide all of the following elements.
The first necessary piece of data is simply a list of relevant keywords. After all, there is no point in optimizing for words that do not pertain to the business, or that will not lead to conversions. Along with these words should be the monthly (or some time period) search volume. Do people actually enter these words as a query into the major search results? You will find that for some words, the volume can be less than one hundred searches globally, while others range in the millions. This data may become even more detailed. For example, a business that provides services only to a certain area might want to focus on local query volumes, rather than global. Examples of such businesses include restaurants, salons, gyms, etc. Some keyword tools also allow the user to specify whether the exact keyword must be the entire query, be included in the query, or only contain synonyms. It may be valuable to consider all three figures. I recommend exporting all of this data to spreadsheet software, such as Excel, for further analysis.
What to do with all this keyword data:
Once the irrelevant, or awkwardly phrased keywords are eliminated from the list, focus should be on search volume. The researcher should keep words with high numbers, as these will provide the most traffic. Unfortunately, the most frequently searched terms are often sought after by many companies. It may be extremely difficult to place on the first page of major search engines for such terms. Thus, the next step in keyword research is to identify competitors for desired keywords, and assess how difficult it will be to beat them. This will greatly aid internet business marketing campaigns.

Your SEO Strategy – How Long Until You See Results?
Most internet marketers have the same question – ‘how long will it take to see results from my SEO strategy?’ Unfortunately, there’s not a magic answer. Getting results out of your SEO strategy can take time.
Don’t listen to people who claim to be SEO ‘experts’, who tell you they can guarantee a number one ranking practically overnight. Between picking the right keywords, creating the right SEO content, and waiting for that content to get backlinks, your SEO strategy can seem like a slow-moving process. In fact, it can take weeks, or even months, for your SEO strategy to translate into more traffic and more profits. While every SEO strategy is different, there are ways to tell if you are headed for SEO success:
1. Look at your competitors.
How many quality backlinks do they have? That will let you know how much you need to play catch-up. After all, you cannot take the number one spot in the search engine rankings without getting backlinks of your own and climbing over other people.
There are free backlink checkers online, where you can search for your competitors’ sites. If they have many quality backlinks, you know you have some work to do to get backlinks of your own. But, if the competition has tons of low-quality or irrelevant links, the number of quality backlinks you have to get may not be as high as you think.
2. Look at your keywords.
Any SEO strategy should be targeting keywords that are high in searches, but low in competition. The more competition your keywords have, the harder it will be to rank well on them.
If you’re thinking about doing additional keyword research, look for longer-tailed keywords, because they tend to have lower competition.
Also, make your keywords as specific as possible. For example, if you’re selling a product that combats stress headaches, do not try to rank on the keyword ‘stress’. Instead, aim for keywords like ‘stress headache relief’ or ‘stress headache remedy’. Keywords like these are a valuable asset to any SEO strategy, because they narrow your target audience. The more you target your audience, the more likely you are to find searchers that will buy from you.
3. Look at your SEO content.
When it comes to any SEO strategy, content is king. You can have the greatest keywords in the world, but if you do not have great content (either on-site or off), visitors are never going to take you seriously. Plus, if you’re not churning out SEO content, you are never going to get enough quality backlinks to raise your search engine ranking.
The best SEO content is unique, full of information, and updated frequently. If readers know that they can depend on you for the latest information, they will be more likely to return to your site. Plus, search engine spiders reward sites that are always publishing unique content. Every unique SEO article that you write counts as another quality backlink.
Above all else, you need to remember that your SEO strategy is a tool for the long-haul. If you keep on top of it, you can increase your traffic, without spending a fortune on paid advertising. After all, if you can get to the top of the search engines organically, you do not need pay-per-click ads.

keyword targeting strategy in your site
Once the keywords have been decided for the site one has to come up with a strategy to target those keywords across the site. Here is a primer on that.
Keywords Targeting Strategy for Keyword of Single word:
Keyword of Single word is useful to attract general audience and helps in getting high rank ,if the web site is new. Keywords Targeting Strategy for Keyword of Single word is that they should be more used in the root level pages or top level domain pages. This is because these pages are the ones that attract the general traffic & are generally the pages which do not specify specifics. Hence single word keywords based on themes can be targeted for on these pages.
Keywords Targeting Strategy for Keyword of Multiple words:
Keyword of Multiple words are useful for attract targeted audience therefore should be used topic wise for each page according to subject of that web page. Relevant set of Keywords should be use in Title tag, Header Tag, Meta tag, Body tag, Alt tag, Anchor tag, Comment tag and in the url (uniform resource locator) of that specific web page. Use underscore or hyphen to differentiate Keywords. These keywords are normally targeted upon in deeper level or sub directory level pages.
Keywords Targeting Strategy for Keyword based on Theme:
Keyword based on theme is useful to attract targeted audience therefore they are strongly recommended to be used. Typically, although it is not a hard and fast rule but in theme based keyword we use general keywords in root level and uses specific keyword in directory level.
Overall one can safely say that in keyword targeting one uses a dart board strategy. Wherein the smallest circle attracts your core audience & hence should have theme oriented multiple word keywords. As we move up on the theme (dartboard) the circle ( traffic) tends to get larger & the keywords tends to get simpler( singular) even though they are theme based.
KEYWORDS and KEYPHRASES usage in Domain Name:
Keywords and keyphrases use in Domain Name & urls of directory pages is also a factor in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as well as it helps to inform targeted audience, about the sites content . Therefore, special care should be exercised in choosing a domain name. All the search engines start reading each web page with its respective domain name.
Having said that, let me add that there is a raging debate amongst the seo community to determine the exact importance of keywords in the domain name. One camp believes that it is hugely important to have keywords in domain whereas the other maintains that brand building domain name is more important than keywords incorporating one.
Whether keyword is a factor or not is debateble however it has been observed that domain name extensions do definitely play a part in rankings. Search engines ( specially google) have a predilection for sites having extension .gov,.edu,.mil in domain name. Search engines believe that information available at these domains would have a greater likelihood of being authentic as no commercial interest is served here.
Domain Name can be classifieds into two categories:
Keyword Specific
Brand Name Specific
Keyword Specific Domain Name
When Keywords and Keyphrases are used in a Domain name then its called Keyword specific Domain name.
Keyword in the domain name to my mind has two advantages.
One It is better to have a keyword domain name for it is worth remembering that most of the people link to you using your URL. If your URL has the keyword or the keyphrase then you are automatically using the keyword in the very important anchor tag.
Secondly, though marginally, in a ranking scenario with every other parameter remaining equal, the Keyword Specific Domain Name will enjoy a slight edge over the other web site. However remember Keyword used in Domain name should be primary and generic. Specific keywords can be used in the sub domains. Read about the use of subdomains.
Keywords and Keyphrases uses with hyphen/underscore in Domain name are said to preferred as they are read by search engines as separate words. So the domain name can have a search phrase incorporated into it. However the flip side of it is that domain names with hyphen or underscore are inconvenient to carry.
Brand Name Specific Domain Name
When company or organizations’ name is used in Domain Name to brand it then it’s called as Brand Name Specific Domain name.
Brand Name Specific Domain Name does not help online searches at all. However they are very powerful tools for company identification in the mind of users. In the anonymous online world a brand spells loyalty, trust & value. So if you choose to go for building your brand rather than deep rooted optimization, one way of incorporating keywords is through your directories & pages names.
KEYWORD DENSITY
Keyword Density is a proportion of the searched term ( Keyword or Keyphrase) against the whole words written on a given page. The ideal Keyword Density is 6%-8% though various search engines have various tolerance levels before their spam filters get activated. Higher Keyword Density does help to boost a pages’ ranking.
Keyword Density can be increased by using target keywords repeatedly in Title tag, Header tag, Body tag, Comment tag, Alt tag, Anchor tag, Paragraph Tag , Domain name and in diretory/page names.
However one disadvantage of trying to hike the keyword density is that the visible text on the page starts to look spammy if it is not carefully crafted. That makes for a bad copy.

Competitive Analysis to understand your competitors SEO Strategy -Position2
SEO Competitive AnalysisÂ
by Team Position2
In order to execute a successful SEO strategy, it is very important to know who your competitors are. Understanding your competitorsâ SEO strategy, website and their level of penetration in the internet is critical to the success of SEO campaigns. What I am referring to is not just direct competitors, but competitors that rank in search engines for the keywords that you optimize your website.
Executing an SEO competitive analysis
Competitive SEO analysis can reveal many interesting findings about your competitorsâ SEO. After you have shortlisted the keywords and the competitors that rank for those keywords, run your competitorsâ websites through this checklist:
Content Analysis: Analyzing your competitorsâ content will help you set a benchmark on how much you need to optimize your website. Title and Description Tags: Compare your title and description tags with your competitorsâ to assess the number of times the keyword appears, placement of keyword and identify if you can make your tags look more appealing than your competitors can. Heading Tags: Compare your competitorsâ websites to identify if, your targeted keywords are used. Analyze the overall density of the keyword present in heading tags. Normally, a top-ranking website will always have the targeted keyword present in the H1, H2 ⦠H6 tags. Body Text: Analyze the overall keyword density, placement of your targeted term in your competitorsâ website to assess how well the content is optimized. Identify if the content is contextually relevant to the keyword being targeted on the page. Alternate Text: Analyze if the images used on your competitorsâ website contain the targeted term. Domain Names and URLs: Most of the websites that contain keywords in their domains would already have scored a brownie point; they would be ranking for those competitive keywords. If the keyword you are targeting is not present in your domain name, ensure that it is at least present in your URLs. Strong and Bold Tags: Most of the competing websites would enclose important keywords within strong or bold tags. This highlights the important terms to search engines. Bulleted Lists: Analyze if your competitors have the targeted keyword present in their bulleted list.
Website Architecture
Your website may have been optimized perfectly for targeted keywords, but if you are still not ranking for your targeted keywords in SERPs. Then it may be because you have bad website architecture
URL Structure: Ensure your websites URL structure is free of any dynamic strings and parameters. This may help you score high rankings in search engines. Domain Age: If your competitorsâ domain age is older than yours is, ensure that you register your domain for at least 10 years. This will help search engines consider that you seriously want to establish your presence on the internet. No-follow Tags: Check if your competitors have used no-follow tags to channel page rank juice throughout the website. Implementing a thematic website structure can do wonders for your website rankings. XML and HTML Sitemaps: Competitor websites that perform well in SERPs always have a HTML sitemap as their internal navigation. Ensure that you create an XML sitemap and submit it to search engines; this will ensure that all the inner pages are crawled, too. Internal Navigation: This is one of the most important factors that decide how well your website performs in SERPs against your competitors. Ensure that your innermost pages are accessible within the first three clicks when a user lands on a page. Your internal navigation could be in the form of top global navigation, footer links, breadcrumbs, category based navigation, news tags, cloud tags, etc. Flash, Ajax, Frames, JavaScriptâs: Your competitors may take your place in SERPs if your content is not visible to search engines. Ensure that critical content that you expect to be crawled is parsed by search engines. Do not make your content as a part of Flash, Ajax, Frames or JavaScriptâs. If you do, ensure that you present an alternate version of the same content in textual format to search engines.
Internal Linking and External Linking
Internal Linking: Assess your competitorsâ internal linking for the keyword you want to optimize and you will notice in most cases that the keyword is present in the internal links of the competitorsâ site. Assess how many such anchor texts are pointing to the ranking URL and the page rank of the pages that have the anchor text for that keyword in your competitorsâ site. This will help you understand how many internal anchor texts you need for your website. External Linking: Most of the external links present in your website must be relevant to the content that is being optimized. Most of your top-ranking competitors would have implemented a no-follow tag on most of their external links. Ensure that external links present on your website has a no-follow tag. This will ensure that you prevent the flow of valuable page rank juice to external sites. Backlinks: Analyze your competitorsâ backlinks for relevance and anchor text. Identify the number of websites that contain the targeted keyword as anchor text and measure the page rank of those linking pages. This will help you understand how much time you need to spend in your back linking efforts.
Once the analysis is complete, ensure that you use this data to compare your website against your competitorsâ. This will tell you how much you need to optimize your website to win your way through SERPs.

Plan Your SEO Strategy by Testing Keywords Using PPC Marketing
Planning any SEO strategy requires meticulous attention. As you may well have read elsewhere, one of the most important decisions a business must make is selecting which keyword phrases it wishes to target as part of its SEO strategy.
Not taking the necessary time and effort to research and identify what are the popular keyword phrases relevant to the products and services your business provides will undoubtedly result in having a negative impact on any SEO initiatives you undertake. However, in some cases even after conducting thorough keyword research, you still may not be able to draw concrete conclusions as to which keyword phrases you should target as part of your SEO strategy. In these situations I strongly recommend using PPC (Pay Per Click) marketing as a good, reliable and cost effective method to test which keyword phrases produce the right results for your business.
Setting up a PPC campaign through the UK’s number 1 search engine, Google, means you can have adverts targeting your list of preferred keywords instantly. However, for a test to be successful it’s important the necessary tracking is in place so you know the money you’re spending with Google is reliable for the sales/leads your business receives.
A good way of helping you achieve this is by implementing Google’s Conversion Tracking software. By implementing this code on areas of your site where you either record a sale, or a customer completes and submits an enquiry form or signs up to use a service etc, this piece of technology follows a customer the moment they have searched and clicked on your advert, and should they complete a transaction such as those mentioned above, Google records the transaction against the keyword that originally generated that lead/sale.
By going through this process, you can soon find out which keyword phrases generate good volumes of traffic and more importantly, which ones gain the most results, such as a purchase, signing up to receive a newsletter, registering to use a service you provide etc.
The best USP with PPC campaigns is you’re in control. You can set the amount of budget you wish to spend on a daily basis and you can decide how long to run a campaign for. Also if you run a campaign and you can see the results quicker than expected then you can simply stop the campaign as and when you wish.
In terms of making your final decision on which keyword phrases should make up your short list of those you want to target as part of your long term SEO strategy, is to understand how competitive those keyword phrases are. By getting an idea as to the competitiveness, you will get an indication of how long it would take before you can expect your site to start appearing on the all important first page of Google’s organic search results once you start your SEO campaigning. Should a particular phrase be very competitive and therefore take you many months to start seeing positive results, you may decide to target a phrase that isn’t quite as popular as you stand a better chance of gaining good visibility within a shorter space of time.
SEO is a process that has to be well thought out and researched from the start, by doing this, you will yield greater results from your investment which in turn, so long as you keep up your SEO efforts will become a good solid long term foundation for any online business.
It is not uncommon for many businesses to run PPC campaigns alongside their SEO targeted keywords, as it may be more cost effective to target some keywords using PPC rather than the time and effort SEO requires. The beauty with online marketing is being able to experiment to find a winning formula that suits your business. It goes without saying, no two businesses are the same, and that scenario holds true in terms of a marketing approach, what works for one business may not work for another.
